Whilst the term intellectual became synonymous with Left-wing progressive doctrines, a small but significant element of artists, writers, poets and thinkers broke ranks.
These literati of the Right spoke to the soul or to the blood, rather that to money and to the market. They asked the kinds of questions about industrialisation, democracy and the rise of money that have yet to be answered as the twenty-first century continues on the path of a global conformity and a world market where culture is becoming even more a commodity.
The crises of the First World War ushered in an age that meant quantity over quality. Behind it all stood the power of the new super-rich. Plutocracy had replace the old aristocracy of family lineage. The rootless proletarian herd had replace the peasant and the craftsman. The trade union as an instrument of class war had replace the craft guild. Science had replace faith. A new serfdom had been established subordinate to Mammon. 
Despite their persecution, this dissident minority has had a lasting impact on our cultural heritage, albeit one that must contend with the deluge of the banal promoted by Hollywood and Madison Avenue.
