"Bill" Joyce had a long history of fascist involvement and had once belonged the the British Fascisti. He joined Mosley and the BUF and became a popular public speaker. Eventually he departed and formed his own group, the National Socialist League. This book explains the ideals and objects of that organisation.
  He later became known as "Lord Haw Haw" and made broadcasts from Germany during the war. It was for this activity that he met his death in London on the gallows.
  His death for treason is still controversial as he was actually born in the USA of Irish parents. Joyce took German nationality on his arrival in Germany, and before that took effect, America was not at war with Germany.
  William Joyce was executed because he had obtained a British passport as a travel document which meant he had accepted the protection of His Majesty's Government - and in return owed loyalty to it. However, the police officer who claimed to have heard a Joyce broadcast during the crucial time before Joyce's German nationality took effect was probably mistaken. The popular name of Lord Haw Haw, really referred to another British broadcaster who spoke with an upper class accent, unlike Joyce.

  Joyce put up little defence at his trial and it has been reported that this was a deal in in which his wife would be more or less absolved for her acts, which were similar to those of Joyce.
