During the existence of the pre-war British Union of Fascists many small booklets were made available dealing with policies and ideas from within the movement.
These were sold at meetings and via mail order. This collection is not complete - but it is one of the most extensive. These publications have been reset and made available as a prime source for students and other interested parties. Post war material can be found under the category heading Union Movement.
  The BUF was founded in 1932, before the advent to power of Adolf Hitler, and before the Holocaust. It gained support because the main political parties could not deal with the problems of the day. During the economic depression in the 1920s and 30s life for the mass of the working people, and particularly those who could not find any employment, was impossibly hard. Bad housing and semi-starvation were commonplace. People who did not want change seemed almost moronic.
  Oswald Mosley had tried hard within the political system to get things done. In this he was defeated. He claimed that action was impossible within the parliamentary system, where 600 representatives opposed one another in the party political game. The political system suffered from paralysis and had become a mere talking shop. Even if a bill got through the parliamentary process it could be obstructed in The House of Lords.
  After examining first hand the Italian system of fascism Mosley began a similar movement in Britain. Most other European nations also developed fascist parties, such as The Blueshirts in Ireland and the NSB. in The Netherlands. The situation was that Britain held the largest empire in the world with all the raw materials it could ever need. Certainly it had the potential of producing more than adequate food supplies for all its people. What was required was action and the will to organise a new system.
  As in all these circumstances the old order wanted to keep things as they were. In addition the Communist Party wanted to reap the benefits of the people's despair and were determined to stifle the new movement at birth. This of course led to considerable disorder on the streets. After the formation of the Blackshirts the battle for free speech was won, but without any press support, except from the Daily Mail for a short period, the only method of spreading the party message was through street meetings and propaganda marches.
  Membership of British Union, as it became known, had peaked by the time war was declared upon Germany. This was in no small measure due to Mosley's peace campaign. In this the main slogans were "Mind Britain's Business" and "Briton's Fight for Britain Only". It was similar in fact the attitude of every other nation on earth except for France.
  This opposition to the Second World War led to the passing of the Defence Regulation 18B and led to the imprisonment without charge or trial of over 1000 leading members of the Movement.
