By Major Francis Yeats-Brown DFC.
The author attended the Royal Military Academy (Sandhurst) England and was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He became a Major in the Bengal Lancers and went on to work as an interpreter in the Indian Secret Service.
He was author of the books Caught by the Turks and Lives of a Bengal Lancer, which was made into a film in 1935 and produced as a TV series in the 1960s. He became a Special Correspondent for the London Times and Associate Editor of The London Spectator magazine. In 1933 he became the founder and editor of Everyman magazine.
He was also an organiser of the January Club which was open to fascists as well as non-fascists, but whose sympathies were in favour of the former.
This contents of this booklet are taken from his book European Jungle (1939) and reprinted from a booklet produced by the Renaissance Press in New Zealand.
In particular the book is about the Spanish Civil War. How it began, why it was fought and how it was fought. It is an account as seen through the eyes of a man who was there. The Guernica episode is dealt with as is that of the siege of the Alcazar. All the main personalities are covered, most of whom the author had met personally, including General Franco.
As most histories of this period are from a left wing perspective, this 50 page study should be read by all those who wish to gain a more balanced view of the subject.
